Work is underway to light Sun Life Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins, University of Miami and the Orange Bowl, with a new light-emitting diode (LED) system designed to enhance the viewing experiences for stadium spectators and television audiences while reducing energy use by as much as 75%.

The stadium’s new system from Ephesus Lighting, part of Eaton Corp. based in Syracuse, N.Y., system is expected to be implemented in time for the beginning of the 2016 NFL football season. Highlights of the system include instant-on capability, which eliminates the warm-up period associated with more traditional bulb-based lighting such as metal halide products, allowing the venue to instantly resume lighting after concerts and other non-sports events and halftime shows.

“As we researched LED lighting options in the marketplace that would help us transform Sun Life Stadium, it became evident that the digital lighting solution developed by Eaton’s Ephesus Lighting was a very competitive, well-engineered system that would meet our unique and specific needs,” Miami Dolphins senior vice president of stadium renovations Bill Senn said.

The Ephesus LED lighting system is brighter than the previous system and its glare-control features shine light more uniformly on the playing surface, creating a better stage for players and fans both in the stadium and those watching on high-definition television. The versatility of an LED system also allows for operational flexibility and the creation of programmable light shows for fan entertainment.

“Since 2012, when we installed the first LED lighting system in a North American sports arena, facility operators have come to understand that our digital lighting solutions create the optimal stage for fans and performers,” said Mike Lorenz, president, Eaton’s Ephesus Lighting business. “Our success at venues of various sizes has established a new standard of what fans, performers, television broadcasters and facility operators expect from lighting.”
