The New Mexico Business Weekly, a business publication covering the state, named Summit Electric Supply, Albuquerque, a “Corporate Hero” for the company's community outreach and philanthropy efforts at a reception last month.

The awards are given to highlight the positive impact that corporations have and the many creative ways they find to help and support their community.

“We are honored and pleased to be included in this group of companies who so generously give their time and money to support Albuquerque, and we appreciate the New Mexico Business Weekly's effort to highlight the positive contributions of businesses,” said Sheila Hernandez, vice president of marketing.

The activities for which Summit was recognized include feeding the hungry via food drives, caring for the sick by supporting organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with associate volunteers and participation; providing materials to Habitat for Humanity and to a similar organization Casas por Cristo in Juarez, Mexico; sending Christmas stockings to troops in Iraq, and even supporting a landmark archaeological dig in Jordan financially and by housing the finds in extra office space at the company's headquarters in Albuquerque.

The company also was named one of 131 semi-finalists for the National Freedom Award, given by the U.S. Defense Department to employers who show exceptional support of the National Guard and Reserve. Summit was nominated by Army 1st Sgt. Daniel Sanchez, a veteran of the Gulf War who retired from the military in 2006. He joined Summit in 1991 as an associate in the company's Phoenix service center.

A national review board will select 35 finalists and then a selection board comprised of senior defense officials and business leaders will narrow the group to 15. The U.S. Defense Department will announce the 2009 finalists in June. Awards are presented in July.
