RAB Electric Manufacturing, Northvale, N.J., had a visable presence at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City with its lighting fixtures. The company provided 1,850 industrial lighting fixtures to form the shape of the Olympic rings. The fixtures were installed on a mountainside 5,000 feet above Salt Lake City.

RAB makes outdoor and industrial lighting and lighting control sensors. The fixtures were each 140 feet in diameter. Electricians did the installation in December and January working in 5 feet of snow using snowmobiles and helicopters to transport equipment. Multiple generators provided power, and 24-hour guards prevented vandalism. The RAB vaporproof fixtures forming the rings had energy-efficient 42-watt compact fluorescent lamps totaling 77,000 watts to create the exceptionally white and bright Olympic ring symbol.
