Alighting upgrade helped a manufacturer of telescopic sights and mountings hit its target of big lighting savings and better illumination.

Mike Palmer of Crescent Electric Supply's branch in Portland, Ore., worked closely with Rainer Poersch, facility manager for Beaverton, Ore.-based Leupold & Stevens Inc., on the project.

A new Williams GL Low Profile lighting system, with T5 HO 54W fluorescent lamps replaced 400W metal-halide lighting. The upgrade reduces energy expense by $20,503 annually, earns a $15,820 utility rebate and qualifies Leupold & Stevens for a 35-percent five-year Oregon Energy Tax Credit.

“We examined ways to improve the work environment while eliminating light and shadow problems,” said Poersch. “Additionally, we wanted lighting that was more energy efficient and that could be turned off when the space wasn't occupied.”

The new lighting system incorporates 187 Williams GL Low profile luminaries, each with four T5 54W HO fluorescent lamps. Replacing the old HID lighting on a one-for-one basis, the lamps are mounted 16 to 18 feet above the floor on 15 to 20 feet spacing, depending on location. The lamps produce 50-plus footcandles (maintained) in the work area for Leupold & Stevens' 500 employees at this 150,000-square-foot plant.

The single-phase, 277-volt system operates 24/6 and is panel controlled, supported by three occupancy sensors in the system.

Installation was done by staff electricians and outside contractor Electrical Construction Co., Portland, Ore. Maintenance on the system will be done in house.

The GL luminaire offers a precision reflector system and a lightweight aluminum housing that makes for quick, simple installation. The GL ships with lamps, cord and occupancy sensor installed. Tool-less access to the ballast via a captive swing-down wireway cover eliminates the need to remove lamps and reflector for service.

“The new lighting provides as much as 35 percent more illumination while conserving energy,” said Poersch. “Shadow problems have been eliminated completely and the occupancy sensors allow us to ‘virtually’ customize the lighting round the clock to accommodate work patterns. We've improved the work environment and reduced costs at the same time. What more can you ask for?”
