ONE-STOP FOR LAMP-RECYCLING INFORMATION The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Rosslyn, Va., unveiled a Web site featuring critical information on lamp recycling for U.S. companies using fluorescent or high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. Sponsored by NEMA's Lamp Section, the site, www.lamprecycle.org, encourages recycling of spent mercury-containing lamps. The Lamp Section members are Eye Lighting International, GE Lighting, Osram Sylvania Inc., Philips Lighting Co., SLI Lighting International, Venture Lighting International, Voltarc Technologies and Ushio America Inc. “It is important that lamps and other products containing mercury be properly managed to protect public health and the environment,” says Peter Bleasby, chair of the NEMA Lamp Section. “Under federal hazardous waste laws, lamp users are responsible for complying with disposal standards. Lamp users, therefore, must be aware of federal and state hazardous and universal waste requirements for management of spent lamps.” These requirements can differ depending on who generates the spent lamps and in which state the user resides. The Web site includes federal and state regulatory spent-lamp management requirements and state regulatory contacts, lists companies that handle and recycle spent lamps, and describes the environmental benefits of mercury-containing lamps and what the lamp industry has done to reduce its use of mercury contained in these lamps.
