For the second consecutive year, W.W. Grainger, Inc., Chicago, Ill., landed a spot on Fortune magazine's list of "The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America." Grainger improved its ranking on the list to 83, up from 92 in 1997, in spite of added competition. Also on the list were 3M at 94 and Baldor Electric at 97. This year's list was pared down from 206 companies invited to participate, up from 163 last year.
