Home Depot Inc., Atlanta, announced plans to acquire White Cap Construction Supply Inc., a distributor of specialty hardware, tools and safety equipment.

Home Depot's acquisition of White Cap is another example of its ongoing expansion far past its core focus on sales to home owners. The company has acquired flooring companies and other businesses in recent years as it expands its Home Depot Supply division, which caters to home builders, facility maintenance professionals, contractors and landscapers.

White Cap, based in Costa Mesa, Calif., operates 70 branch locations throughout the United States and employs 1,720 people. Its annual sales are approximately $500 million.
