Housing starts drop 3% in July

Privately owned housing starts in July 2000 came in at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,512,000, around 3% below the revised June rate of 1,563,000 and 11% below the same month a year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

Single-family housing starts nationwide in June were at a rate of 1,197,000, which was 2% below the revised June figure of 1,222,000. The July rate for units in buildings with five or more units was 279,000.

During the first seven months of 2000, the number of housing units started was 955,100. This figure was 2% below the 979,200 units started in the same period in 1999.
