Housing starts flat in August Brendan O'Bryhim Oct 1, 2000 12:00 PM Privately owned housing starts in August were essentially unchanged from the revised July rate of 1.52 million, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of the Census. Housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,531,000, according to the Census report. While housing starts held a steady pace in August compared to July, they were 8% less than the August 1999 rate of 1,657,000. Single-family housing starts in August 2000 were at a rate of 1,261,000; 5% above the July figure of 1,205,000. The August rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 230,000. The August rate for units in buildings with two to four units was 40,000. During the first eight months of this year, 1,100,800 housing units were started compared with 1,134,200 units for the same period in 1999. This is a decrease of 3%.
