IALD Award Winners Light Up the World Gail Johnson Jul 1, 1999 12:00 PM The best lighting designers in the World were recognized at Lightfair 1999, San Francisco, Calif., for their remarkable lighting solutions, creativity and technical acumen. The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Lighting Design Awards program, established in 1983, recognizes lighting projects that display high aesthetic achievement backed by technical expertise. The most prestigious of the awards, the Award of Excellence, was bestowed on the designers of four projects: Douglas Brennan and Andre Tammes, IALD, of the British firm Lighting Design Partnership, for their work on the Erasmus Bridge (pictured) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Charles G. Stone II, Scott J. Hershman and Enrique Garcia Carrera, of the New York-based firm Fisher Marantz Stone, for their work on the the Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong, China; J.K. Yao, IALD, of the Taiwan-based firm chroma33 Architectural Lighting Design, Inc., for his work on the China United Trust & Investment Co., (Chung Lien Bank) in Taipei, Taiwan; and Takeshi Konishi, the lighting designer of the EPK Corporation, with architects Ei Kawakita and Shinsuke Utsumi of the firm Takenaka Corporation, for their work on the Sagawa Art Museum in Shiga, Japan. The designers of six other projects received Awards of Merit, while designers of three projects received Special Citations. This year the competition received entries for 134 eligible projects from designers around the world, a 50% increase from last year.
