Merger mania marches on

Anicom, Inc., Rosemont, Ill., has signed a letter of intent to buy Superior Cable & Supply, Inc., Tulsa, Okla., in its 15th acquisitions since July 1995. Superior Cable distributes multimedia wiring products and posted sales of $5.5 million in 1997 through seven locations in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

Billows Electric Supply Co., Philadelphia, Pa., purchased Franklin Electric Co., Atlantic City, N.J., with six locations, for an undisclosed amount of money. Billows is the 78th-largest electrical distributor in the country, with seven locations and 215 employees going into the deal. Franklin Electric, with seven locations and 65 employees, is 233rd.

Cooper Electric Supply Co., Tinton Falls, N.J., acquired certain assets of Gamarel Electrical Supply Co., Irvington, N.J. The sale does not include Gampak Products Corp., Hillside, N.J., a related company that packages electrical products in blister packs for home centers and hardware stores.

Genuine Parts Co., Atlanta, Ga., best known for its original business, the NAPA Auto Parts Stores chain, will acquire electrical and electronics distributor EIS, Inc., also of Atlanta. A Genuine Parts spokesperson said his company will use EIS as a platform to acquire more electronics distributors. EIS, formerly Electrical Insulation Suppliers, is the 11th-largest distributor of electrical products in the U.S. based on 1997 sales. The company is expected to reach $500 million in total sales in 1998.

Platt Electric Supply, Beaverton, Ore., purchased 10-employee ESCO Electric Supply of Bend, Ore. ESCO Electric Supply has served central and eastern Oregon since 1983.
