NIGHT SKY GETS DARKER ABOVE LONG ISLAND

Apr 1, 2004 12:00 PM

The skies above Long Island will be dark again as the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) replaces existing floodlights with “dark skies friendly” Mongoose luminaries from Holophane. LIPA recently completed the first full-cutoff Mongoose installation at its Bridgehampton yard in Bridgehampton, N.Y., as part of a new dark-skies-friendly night-light program.

According to Richard Kessel, LIPA chairman, the optics on the Mongoose luminaires direct the light downward, helping to eliminate uplight and side glare. The fixtures also significantly reduce the amount of light that spills onto neighboring properties.

“LIPA's new lighting standard will enable us to meet customers' night lighting needs while helping to preserve one of Long Island's most precious resources — the dark night sky,” said Kessel.

The Mongoose luminaries are available with 14 optical configurations and tilts ranging from 0 degrees to 45 degrees, making them suited to a wide variety of lighting applications.

The Bridgehampton yard is a 24/7 operation where equipment and material are stored for workers who maintain the electrical system on the south fork of Long Island. In the past, the floodlights left dark spots in the yard while drawing numerous complaints from neighbors about the light.

“More than a billion dollars are wasted on escaped light each year,” said Susan Harder, who helped lead the Dark Skies Society of Long Island effort to change the lighting policy.

Headquartered in Newark, Ohio, Holophane is an Acuity Brands company. For more information, visit www.holophane.com.
