OSHA Training for Forklift Operators Gail Johnson Jul 1, 1999 12:00 PM Companies looking for training on the new OSHA requirements for operating forklifts can find help from Miles Multimedia, Hillcrest Center, Calif. The company has produced two safety videos, with a supplemental workbook, available as a hard-copy edition by mail or in electronic format on the Internet. The first video, Forklift I: Handling the Vehicle, covers the basics of forklift operation. From starting up to stopping and parking, this video shows the operator how to avoid injuries to himself and co-workers. It covers travel on level surfaces, up and down grades, over railroad tracks, in and out of vehicles and through congested areas. It provides tips for turning, trailer and rail car loading and unloading, and covers vehicle balance and safety for both battery- and propane-powered vehicles. Forklift II: Handling the Load shows the operator how to safely handle products, whether lifting uniform loads or handling a variety of shapes, sizes and weights. It covers precautions to take when handling heavy or large loads, tiering and stacking loads, and carrying mixed freight. The videos are short and concise, each less than 15 minutes in length. Two workbooks supplement the videos and include review questions. As part of the service you can download copies of the workbooks from the Internet to hand out to your employees. Additional training is available online through the Internet.
