Overgrown Weed Sprouts to Win Lighting Design Competition

Mar 1, 2002 12:00 PM

Along blade of grass waving in the wind inspired industrial design student Takeshi Ohara to create an outdoor lighting fixture that took top honors in the Luraline Products Co., Opa Locka, Fla., first annual “It's Your Light” student design competition.

Ohara, 26, of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., designed a bollard fixture for nighttime illumination of exterior sidewalks and pathways. He will receive a $1,500 cash prize, and his school will receive $1,000.

“The concept was inspired by an overgrown weed, resulting in a shape that angles over the sidewalk or grass to illuminate it,” Ohara said. “A dual light source downlights the driveway or sidewalk, while green glass on top casts a glow onto the grass.”

The jury of architects and designers cited the originality of the concept and its presentation for standing out among the hundreds of entries received from interior design schools and universities across the country.

The annual competition solicits concepts for interior, exterior, commercial and residential lighting fixtures from design and architecture students throughout the United States. For more details, please call (800) 940-6588 or visit www.luraline.com.
