Philips' compact fluorescent wins Popular Science award Gail Johnson Jan 1, 1998 12:00 PM Philips Lighting Co., Somerset, N.J.,has taken home Popular Science magazine's 1997 "Best of What's New" award in the environmental technology category for its Earth Light dimmable compact fluorescent light. The Earth Light Dimmable is an integrated CFL with dimming capabilities for use with photocells, motion detectors and standard wall dimmers. When adjusted to full brightness, the 23W Earth Light provides a light output of 1,500 lumens, which is equivalent to the output of a 90Wincandescent lamp, and it has an average life span of 10,000 hours or five to seven years of normal residential use.
