RUMSEY/TECOT CUSTOMER RUMBLES HOME ON A HOG Gail Johnson Jun 1, 1999 12:00 PM Roy Krieg, a licensed electrician and employee of Vassallo Electric in Wilmington, Del., has rolled into Tecot Electric Supply, also in Wilmington, many times to make purchases. Little did he know that one day he'd be rolling out of there on a brand new Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycle, compliments of 3M Electrical Products Division, Austin, Texas. The motorcycle was up for grabs in a promotion for 3M Performance Plus Wire Connectors that ran during the summer and fall of 1998. The promotion for end-users included entry forms for a random drawing for the Harley-Davidson and discount coupons for Burger King, as well as promotional items for counter salespeople at electrical distributorships. Krieg would buy the connectors in small boxes for each of the jobs he was working on and says, over a period of time, he filled out six or seven entry cards for the Sportster motorcycle--a step up from the Harley he already owned. Vince Sanzone, vice president and general manager of Tecot Electric Supply, and a Harley-Davidson owner himself, was very excited about the promotion and encouraged his counter salesmen to participate. They put up the free-standing displays provided by 3M in all their branches and found that the promotion led to an increase in sales of not only the Performance Plus connectors, but also 3M tapes, splice kits, wire lube and heat shrink.
