Summit Electric Launches Patriotic Campaign

Feb 1, 2002 12:00 PM

Reminiscent of the patriotic posters and slogans that sought the hearts and minds of Americans during WWII, a modern-day patriotic campaign launched by Summit Electric Supply, Albuquerque, N.M., seeks to comfort the city's citizens in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the country.

In addition to Summit's donation of almost $100,000 to the Salvation Army and American Red Cross relief efforts, Summit President Victor R. Jury Jr. wanted to do something for the citizens of Albuquerque.

To support the American ideals of liberty, unity, heroism and faith, Summit purchased space on billboards, streets and bus panels, emblazoning them with patriotic images and quotes.

“It's our way of reinforcing how great it is to be an American,” said Jury. “We wanted to encourage the community to remember and be thankful for the many blessings we enjoy in America.”

According to Sheila Hernandez, Summit's director of marketing, the company has received many positive comments regarding the campaign. “A woman who saw the freeway billboard looked up our phone number and called just to say that she was moved by the message and image,” said Hernandez. The woman made a point of saying she was not a customer — just a person driving down the freeway.

Although television, print and radio media have reported on Summit's efforts to support its community and nation, Jury said he struggled with the idea of bringing any attention to Summit. “We are not doing this to benefit our company — this is for our community,” Jury said. “My hope is that other organizations will continue to be motivated to find unique ways to support America during this difficult time.”
