While the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore, Md.-Northern Virginia metroplex is having a recession like everyone else, you wouldn't know it from some of the massive construction projects underway. Being partially funded by your tax dollars through the stimulus package are the renovation of the U.S. Commerce Department in downtown D.C.; a $435 million new home for the U.S. Coast Guard (the biggest stimulus-funded project to date); and several other massive military facilities and offices. Large projects outside of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area include a 500,000-square-foot data center being built by Apple in Maiden, N.C., and a $159.6 million hospital job in Orlando. One word sums up the Florida housing market: ugly.
