Werner Electric Supply Co., Neenah, Wis., has signed an agreement to acquire Northland Electric Supply, Minneapolis, one of the largest independents in the Upper Midwest.

Lynn MacDonald, Werner president and chief executive officer, described the acquisition as a major geographic expansion for the company, which has been expanding beyond its Wisconsin roots to become a large regional player.

Northland Electric Supply, Minneapolis, is the 55th biggest distributor in the nation, according to Electrical Wholesaling's 250 Biggest listing. The company, which did $78 million in sales last year, has 175 employees and six locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

According to Werner, the acquisitions of Northland and Van Meter Industrial, which it announced it was acquiring in February, will place the company among the nation's 20 biggest electrical distributors in terms of gross annual sales. The company is currently No. 53 on the 250 Biggest listing.
