Meyda Installs Monster Chandelier

May 1, 2008 12:00 PM

Meyda Lighting, Yorkville, N.Y., last month installed what it bills as the world's largest LED free-hanging chandelier, lighting up the Stanley Center for the Arts in Utica, N.Y. Meyda Lighting installed the chandelier after one year of planning and production in its manufacturing facilities.

Designed and engineered with state-of-the-art technology and energy efficiency, The Stanley Chandelier is lit with 170 Phillips Lumileds Luxian light-emitting diodes in the main body, and 104 candelabra-based LEDs in the bobeches. The illumination of the fixture is equivalent to 720 100W incandescent lamps, but only uses power equivalent to eleven 100W incandescent lamps, for an energy savings of 98.5 percent. Based on the Stanley's average usage, Meyda estimates life expectancy of 50 years for the lamps.

Built of custom-craftedsteel, blown-glass and acrylic, the fixture is 35 feet in diameter, 17 feet tall and weighs 7,000 pounds. It was assembled in several sections of tubular steel trusses, plus a dozen sections of other steel trusses, framework and decorative embellishments. The chandelier, hand-finished in antique gold and bronze, was designed to complement the Stanley Theater's Mexican baroque Moorish theme.
