Night baseball has become a reality for a middle school in Whitman, Mass., after the town won Granite City Electric's “Field of Dreams III” sweepstakes. In August, Phyllis Godwin, chairman and CEO of Granite City Electric, threw the switch to flood the ball field behind Whitman's middle school with 36,000W of light. The town of Whitman was selected to receive a $100,000 professional sports lighting system. Materials were donated by Reflex Lighting of Boston and installation was donated by Glynn Electric of Plymouth, Mass.

Former President of Whitman's Baseball/Softball Association, Chris Johnson, initiated the town's bid for the sweepstakes during last year's competition.

Since its win, the town has come together to improve the overall conditions of its ball fields. Volunteers pitched in to create new dugouts and a concession stand, and to improve the park's infield.

During the lighting ceremony, Godwin expressed GCE's excitement about the Field of Dreams sweepstakes and what a thrill it is for her to see the joy it brings the children and parents of Whitman to play the first game of many under the lights. After the evening's ceremonial duties, Godwin threw out the first pitch and the girls and boys of Whitman's All Star teams took to the field and played well into the evening under the lights.

“The Granite City Electric Field of Dreams program is a win-win situation,” says Steve Helle, GCE's president. “In a time when town budgets are getting tighter and tighter, this type of project helps to inspire people's involvement and contribution toward an asset that will enhance community spirit, pride and lasting childhood memories for generations to come.”
