Need a little something to add "spark" to your display, tradeshow or company event? How about a 25-meter lightning bolt generated by a 35-million-volt Tesla coil? Rosen Electrical Equipment Co., Pico Rivera, Calif., in partnership with Tesla Technology Research in Monrovia, Calif., which specializes in high voltage engineering and development, is now offering Tesla coils ranging from a half million volts to 35 million volts.
Tesla Technology has provided special effects for the motion picture/television/magazine/advertising media industries. Projects have included films such as "The Entity," "Friday the Thirteenth-Part Six," the trailer for "Something Wicked This Way Comes," and television series such as "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Incredible Hulk." Magazine publications include GQ, Discover, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated for Kids.
Besides entertainment applications, the coil may offer valuable insights into plasmoid research. The unit shown on Rosen Electrical Equipment's home page, shown at right (www.rosenelectric.com), is a 17-million-volt unit using a 100 kva, 240 volt, 1-phase power supply. It can throw a lightning bolt up to 16 meters in length. When upgraded with a 3-phase power supply, it is expected to throw a lightning bolt of up to 25 meters in length. The company's largest design, a 35 million to 40 million volt unit using a 500 kva, 480 volt, 3-phase power supply is expected to be able to throw a lightning bolt of up to 50 meters in length when it is built.
