Expanding its market interests further into lighting controls, Acuity Brands Inc. announced plans to buy Sensor Switch Inc. in a $205 million deal. Wallingford, Conn.-based Sensor Switch makes lighting controls and energy management systems. It generated $37 million in sales in fiscal 2008. Acuity also purchased Lighting Control and Design earlier this year to expand its capabilities into intelligent lighting products and lighting control solutions.

"The acquisition of Sensor Switch is part of our growth strategy aimed at offering the most technologically advanced sustainable lighting solutions incorporating both controls and fixtures to maximize energy savings while delivering exceptional quality lighting for commercial, institutional, industrial and residential applications," said Vernon J. Nagel, chairman, president, and CEO of Acuity Brands, in a news release. "We believe this acquisition will broaden our participation in both the new construction and building systems markets while greatly expanding our presence in the very large and dynamic renovation and relight market."

The Atlanta-based Acuity's other brands include Lithonia Lighting, Holophane, Peerless, Mark Architectural Lighting, Hydrel, American Electric Lighting, Gotham, Carandini, SpecLight, MetalOptics, Antique Street Lamps and Synergy Lighting Controls.
