PEARL Releases Medium-Voltage Reconditioning Standards

Oct. 14, 2008
Electrical supply houses and contractors interested in how to remanufacture or test and inspect the quality of recycled medium-voltage electrical apparatus

Electrical supply houses and contractors interested in how to remanufacture or test and inspect the quality of recycled medium-voltage electrical apparatus now have 23 technical standards as reference thanks to the Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL).

PEARL is a trade association that creates, collects and disseminates information, policies, procedures and standards to ensure the proper recycling and reuse of electrical power equipment. According to PEARL, the electrical goods reconditioned to its standards are held to a higher testing standard than new electrical apparatus because each device is tested individually rather than batch-tested. PEARL-reconditioned apparatus also spares the planet thousands of tons of unnecessary waste each year, and cuts U.S. energy consumption compared to manufacturing new products, the organization says.

PEARL's new medium-voltage apparatus recycling standards cover disconnect switches; circuit breakers; panelboards, switchboards and switchgear; transformers; motor control centers and components; motor control devices and medium-voltage wire and cable.

PEARL's electrical apparatus recycling standards are organized in two categories: Reconditioning standards and Test & Inspect standards. Only electrical apparatus that comply with these standards and come from companies that meet PEARL's business, ethics and integrity requirements qualify to carry the associated PEARL Quality Seal (blue for reconditioned devices, green for tested and inspected).

PEARL's medium-voltage apparatus recycling standards are available for free to the public from the PEARL website www.pearl1.org, where you can also get a list of the more than 70 dealers of new, reconditioned and surplus electrical devices that are members of the PEARL trade association.
