Recall: Cooper Lighting Fluorescent Fixtures

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Eaton Lighting announced a recall of Cooper Lighting Portfolio and Utilitech fluorescent lighting fixtures, saying the luminaires’ socket can overheat, arc and melt, posing a fire hazard.

The CPSC website said the firm has received seven reports of sockets overheating, melting or arcing, but no injuries have been reported.

Recalled fixtures include two-light linear fluorescent shoplights, striplights and utility wrap lights sold at retailers such as Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm and True Value (electrical distributors were not listed as a sales outlet). The site says 1.62 million units have been sold in the United States and another 27,000 in Canada. Date codes listed run from July 2011 to March 2015.

Owners of these fixtures are directed to contact Cooper Lighting for a free replacement.
