Beyond 1,000 Miles Per Gallon

June 19, 2013
The team from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill., placed third overall among 28 teams from the United States and Canada with a best run of 1,173 miles on a single gallon of gas.

Toolmaker Ideal Industries, Sycamore, Ill., sponsored a college engineering team in this month's Society of Automotive Engineers' Supermileage competition in Marshall, Mich. The team from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill., placed third overall among 28 teams from the United States and Canada with a best run of 1,173 miles on a single gallon of gas.

Northern Illinois University's Supermileage team, sponsored by Ideal and SK Hand Tools, took third in the SAE national competition.

Sponsored by Ideal and its subsidiary SK Hand Tools, this specially-designed single-person car constructed by engineering students at Northern Illinois University was powered by a one-cylinder, four-cycle engine donated by Briggs & Stratton.

Now in its 34th year, the Society of Automotive Engineers' Supermileage competition pits teams from around the world who are challenged to use advanced materials and technologies, as well as their design creativity, to get the most out of their vehicles. This year's overall winner was Pennsylvania State University's Behrend College.
