Office construction around the World Trade Center site including the recently completed Freedom Tower shown here has been one of the largest construction projects in the country over the past few years

2014 Middle Atlantic Region Forecast

Nov. 7, 2013
New York City's construction market is going strong with an estimated $31.5 billion in construction spending expected in 2014. Construction employment is also up in the city, where the BLS says 5,000 jobs were added through August 2013. On the drawing boards are the redevelopment of the area around the 30th St. Station and Camden, N.J.'s waterfront.

The Big Apple has been one of the nation’s hottest urban construction markets, and 2014 should prove to be no different, as there’s a staggering array of office construction, mass transit upgrades and residential redevelopment underway. The New York Building Congress said a surge in residential building in the city will boost total construction spending 14% this year to $31.5 billion, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics says metropolitan New York added 5,000 jobs year-to-year through August. Over the next few years, these contractors may be working on a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) massive mass transit project; the Second Ave. subway project; a 36-story office tower for the United Nations; the $3 billion Willets Point mixed-use redevelopment project now under consideration; or one of the many luxury high-rise condo towers sprouting up all over the city.

There’s a major mass-transit project on the drawing boards in Philadelphia, too, with Amtrak’s plans for the redevelopment of the city’s 30th Street Station area. Other projects of note either underway or in the planning process include the $700 million, 2.3-million-square-foot Greater Philadelphia World Trade Center project to redevelop Camden waterfront; a multi-billion chip fabrication plant in Stillwater, N.Y.; the $400 million Prudential office tower in Newark; and the $230 million Kalahari Resort and Convention Center being built on Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.

Acquisition activity. For such a large region, it's surprising there haven't been more large electrical distributors acquired over the past five years. According to Electrical Marketing newsletter's Electrical Market Acquisition database, the largest aquisition was Turtle & Hughes' purchase this year of Mid-Island Electrical Supply in Commack, N.Y.
