Shealy Electrical Wholesalers Announces Intentions to Acquire Nova Lighting

July 17, 2014
Shealy Electrical Wholesalers, West Columbia, S.C., announced today its intentions to acquire Nova Lighting, Charlotte, N.C.

Shealy Electrical Wholesalers, West Columbia, S.C., announced today its intentions to acquire Nova Lighting, Charlotte, N.C., a lighting specialist that provides customers in the Southeast with a robust package of lighting products and energy management solutions (auditing, design, and installation).  Both companies will work through due diligence process over the next several months with a planned closing timeline of late third quarter, according to the press release announcing the acquisition.

Bill DeLoache, Shealy CEO, said in that press release, “The acquisition continues a strategic focus on growing our lighting and lighting control presence in the Carolinas.  Nova Lighting has positioned itself in the market as a leading lighting supplier, consultant and turnkey provider.  Advancements in lighting technology and efforts to reduce energy demand have changed expectations from a distribution and design perspective.  Servicing today’s market requires a more sophisticated approach, additional strategic resources, broader and deeper inventory and the ability to cover more territory.”

Nova has locations in Charlotte, N.C., Columbia, S.C., and Greenville, S.C. Its website says it services customers in the following niches: commercial buildings, industrial, warehouse/distribution, hospitality, institutional/educational facilities, retail, petroleum/convenience stores, healthcare, auto dealerships and municipalities. The company also says it works closely with customers and utilities to submit all necessary paperwork for the lighting upgrade incentives and that it also helps customers prepare all necessary documents related to federal energy efficiency tax incentives, for the customers’ tax files.

Bill Hurd, the company’s president, has been in the lighting business for 26 years, according to information on www.novalighting.org. A former president of NAILD (National Association of Independent Lighting Distributors), he started his lighting career with Philips Lighting in 1987 and worked his way up to Southeast regional manager and joined Nova Lighting in 2000.

He said in the press release, “It is exciting and timely because Shealy has established themselves as the best of the best and offers Nova Lighting the clearest synergies needed to effectively service our lighting market and expand our energy project capabilities.  I am confident that this partnership will allow Nova Lighting to continue its commitment to lead with the best people in the industry, supported by the best in class distributor and to continue servicing our very loyal customers with an even greater passion due to the accelerated resources now available to us.”

Shealy, a member of the Affiliated Distributors buying/marketing group, was formed in 1945 as an independent electrical wholesale distributor and currently has 17 locations in North and South Carolina.  The company was ranked #35 in Electrical Wholesaling’s 2014 ranking of the Top 200 electrical distributors and has 300 employees. Shealy’s 2011 merger with Electrical Distributors Inc. (EDI), Charlotte, N.C., another Top 200 electrical distributor, bolstered the company’s business in the North Carolina market.
