As more ferries, tugboats and other ships are powered by batteries, shoreside charging stations will become a new business opportunity for electrical contractors, distributors, reps and other electrical professionals.

At the recent ABB FIA Formula E race in Portland, OR, Electrical Wholesaling chatted with Ed Schwarz, VP of Sales for Marine Systems, Process Automation for ABB, about future business opportunities for the electrical market in shoreside charging systems for electrically powered marine vessels.

Schwarz, one of the nation’s leading proponents of electric propulsion in the maritime industry, has more than 20 years of experience in the maritime world. At ABB, he leads the development of business strategy for hybrid and electric solutions for all segments in the Americas.

Ed also served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and received the Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal for participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, with a bachelor’s of science degree in Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management.
