Boston contractors are busy again, with the construction of two of the nation's biggest office construction projects — a 1.1 million-square-foot office building on the harbor for Vertex Pharmaceuticals and a 22-story, 590,000-square-foot headquarters building for Liberty Mutual. Fairfield, Conn., won't be enjoying any new office construction too soon — the city and its suburbs have tons of empty office space, with the central business district and suburbs suffering from office vacancy rates of 29.1 percent and 21 percent,

Fairfield, Conn., won't be enjoying any new office construction too soon — the city and its suburbs have tons of empty office space, with the central business district and suburbs suffering from office vacancy rates of 29.1 percent and 21 percent, respectively. The region's housing market is still in rough shape, as single-family and multi-family building permits are all down more than 20 percent through August. But there's good news in the institutional construction arena, with the $220 million Maine General Hospital project in Augusta, Maine; an $189 million expansion at Yale University; and a $115 million construction job at the University of Massachusetts' Dorchester, Mass., campus.
