2016 Mountain Region Forecast

Nov. 30, 2015
Big projects rule this region, ranging from data centers and Tesla's $5 billion "Gigafactory" in Nevada to a host of construction along the Front Range of the Rockies in Colorado. Utah is posting particularly good numbers in both manufacturing and construction employment. Overall, electrical sales in the Mountain region is expected to grow by 0.7% in 2016 after a similar increase in 2015.

Colorado’s Front Range is growing fast and Nevada’s construction industry will enjoy new data centers being built in Reno and Las Vegas,  the Tesla plant near Reno, a  large casino project and a 230-mile high speed rail link to Los Angeles.  By some growth metrics, it’s Utah that’s growing at the fastest pace. On the state level, Utah’s manufacturing employment is up 4.2% to 126,500 and construction employment is up 17% year-to-date to 84,100.  In past years, you heard most about all that’s happening in Salt Lake City, but the good news is spreading into other metros throughout the state, too. The Logan and Provo-Orem MSAs have good numbers on the construction and manufacturing fronts and Provo is one of the highest flyers in the nation when measured by Gross Metropolitan Product (GMP).
