Graybar, Border States Among Largest Employee-owned Companies

July 1, 2009
Graybar, St. Louis, and Border States Electric (BSE), Fargo, N.D., were again named in the listing of the 100 largest majority employee-owned companies

Graybar, St. Louis, and Border States Electric (BSE), Fargo, N.D., were again named in the listing of the 100 largest majority employee-owned companies in the United States. Graybar ranked 14th on the list with 8,600 employees, and BSE was 80th with 1,310 people. The list is compiled annually by the National Center for Employee Ownership, a private, nonprofit membership and research organization in Oakland, Calif. The distributors are joined on the list by electrical contractor Rosendin Electric, San Jose, Calif., at number 70.

“This year marks our 25th anniversary of employee-ownership,” says Tammy Miller, Border States' CEO. “Over the last 25 years, employee-ownership has had a dramatic impact on our business. Our rate of growth and profitability exceed industry benchmarks. I believe our success is a result of our employee-ownership culture. Employee-owners are willing to ‘go the extra mile’ for a customer or on a project because they know when the company is successful, they will personally share the financial rewards.”
